Palma and the Tramuntana demand different attention. In the city, former palaces turn inward around stone courtyards, with markets, galleries and dinner reached on foot. In the mountains, olive terraces, limestone villages and narrow roads make the journey part of the stay. Inland fincas offer another rhythm, built around shade, cultivated land and long evenings. Choose a neighbourhood, village or farmhouse as the fixed point; daily circuits flatten Mallorca into roads and parking.

Mountain villages, old olive terraces and roads that make distance feel different.

Courtyard houses, market mornings and an old city that works beyond a weekend.
Palma is the strongest choice for architecture, markets, restaurants and a trip that can begin without a car. The Serra de Tramuntana suits mountain walks, stone villages and hotels built into old olive estates. For swimming, look towards Port de Sóller or the quieter coves along the east and south-east coasts. Mallorca’s interior offers finca hotels, vineyards and agricultural land with fewer visitors. The right area depends on whether the day should begin in the street, on a mountain path or in the water.
Palma offers the more spontaneous stay. The old town, waterfront, galleries and restaurants can all be reached on foot, and its courtyard hotels provide privacy without removing you from the city. The Tramuntana asks you to accept slower roads, quieter evenings and greater dependence on the hotel. In return, mountain villages, olive terraces and coastal paths become part of daily life. The two work well in sequence, with Palma first and the mountains after.
Not for a stay in central Palma. For finca hotels, mountain villages and quieter coves, a car becomes difficult to avoid. Tramuntana roads are narrow, steep and slower than the distances suggest, while rural properties may sit well beyond the nearest village. Avoid planning several opposite corners of the island into one day. If the trip begins in Palma, collect the car when leaving the city rather than paying to keep it in a garage while exploring on foot.
It depends on what you expect from the coast. Palmanova offers broad sand, simple access and a more social hotel scene. The east and south-east are shaped by smaller calas, where hotels may sit above the water with steps down to a sheltered cove. Port de Sóller combines a harbour beach with walking routes into the Tramuntana. The mountain coast around Deià and Cala Tuent is more dramatic, but reaching the water can involve steep roads, limited parking and a climb back.
Choose a finca hotel when cultivated land, a pool and meals at the property should carry part of the day. A beach hotel removes the parking, towels and daily negotiation around reaching the water. Vacation rentals offer kitchens, private outdoor space and more control, but steep access, shopping and driving remain your responsibility. Not every finca is still a working farm, so look beyond the stone walls and check whether the estate produces wine, olive oil or food rather than using agriculture as decoration.
Four nights is enough for Palma or one compact part of the island. Seven allows two bases, such as the city followed by the Tramuntana, a central finca or the south-east coast. Ten days gives the trip room for mountains, inland towns and proper beach time without crossing the island repeatedly. Mallorca is manageable on a map but slower on its secondary roads. Changing hotels every two nights usually creates more packing and parking than discovery.
May, June, September and early October offer warm days, usable beaches and better conditions for walking beyond the coast. July and August bring the hottest weather, crowded calas and the highest room rates, particularly around Deià and the most accessible beach towns. Spring suits the Tramuntana, cycling and finca stays before the heat settles in. Autumn keeps the sea warm and brings the island’s food, wine and cultivated interior back into clearer view.
