Mallorca’s northwest is shaped by steep ground. Villages sit between limestone peaks and the sea, olive trees grow on terraces cut into the slopes, and journeys that look short on a map can take most of the morning. Valldemossa and Deià receive the attention, but the range also reaches through Sóller, Fornalutx, Esporles and the quieter foothills beyond. Staying here makes the mountains part of everyday decisions: whether to walk into the village, follow a coastal path or accept that lunch may be a slow drive away. The reward is a version of Mallorca where geography still controls the pace.
The Tramuntana works best when it is treated as more than a day trip. Once the coaches leave Valldemossa and Deià settles after dinner, the villages become easier to understand. Staying overnight also gives you the cooler hours for walking, cycling or following the old paths between olive terraces. Hotels here tend to occupy buildings tied directly to the mountains: former presses, family fincas, vineyard estates and stone houses built into difficult ground. The coast is always close, but rarely simple to reach. That tension between mountain and sea is precisely what gives the region its character.

Es Vergeret sits high above Cala Tuent, reached by a narrow road that makes the arrival feel earned. People come here for the paella, cooked properly and brought out to a table facing the bay. The view does its part, but the food holds up. It’s one of the best restaurants in Mallorca for a long, straightforward meal done right.
The Serra de Tramuntana asks you to organise the trip around landscape, walking and slow journeys between villages. Evenings are quieter, hotels are more self-contained and a car is useful unless you stay close to a village centre. The Revel Stay guide to Palma de Mallorca is the stronger choice if you want restaurants, galleries, architecture and most of the day to happen on foot. Choose the Tramuntana for mountain air, old estates and mornings that begin outside. Choose Palma when street life, cultural access and freedom from driving matter more.

Courtyard houses, market mornings and an old city that works beyond a weekend.
