Chora solves the practical side of Naxos. The port, kastro, restaurants and Agios Georgios sit within reach on foot, making evenings easy and the car optional. Down the south-west coast, Plaka exchanges that convenience for long sand; Mikri Vigla adds wind, kitesurfing and quieter roads. Inland, olive groves, marble villages and the Temple of Demeter give the island another centre. Naxos is large enough to resist constant crossing, so let the place you stay decide the shape of most days.

Long sand, stronger wind and the south-west coast of Naxos at its least complicated.

A working port, a Venetian hill town and the easiest place to experience Naxos without organising every day around a car.
Stay in Naxos Town when restaurants, harbour evenings and moving around without a car matter most. Chora combines old lanes, the Venetian kastro and the Portara with a usable town beach at Agios Georgios. Choose Plaka or Mikri Vigla when the sea should control the day and driving to dinner feels like a reasonable exchange for more sand and space. The north-west coast offers greater isolation, while an inland stay reveals the cultivated valleys and villages that make Naxos more than a beach island.
Plaka is the easier beach base. Its long sand moves between organised sections, tavernas and quieter stretches, allowing several days to pass without much planning. Mikri Vigla feels more exposed. Its northern beach catches the meltemi and draws kitesurfers, while the southern side of the cape can offer calmer swimming. Hotels are more dispersed and a car is considerably more useful. Choose Plaka for long, uncomplicated beach days. Choose Mikri Vigla for wind, activity and a less developed coastal setting.
Not if you stay in Chora and are content with Agios Georgios, bus trips and evenings on foot. Elsewhere, a car changes what is possible. It opens the south-west beaches, the villages around Halki and Filoti, the Temple of Demeter and the remote north-west and eastern coasts. Naxos is larger than it first appears, and mountain roads make distance a poor measure of journey time. Plan one part of the island each day rather than repeatedly crossing it.
The meltemi is not a minor detail, particularly around Mikri Vigla and the exposed western beaches. For kitesurfers, it is the reason to come. For swimmers, it can change which side of the coast works best that day. A private pool or sheltered outdoor space becomes more valuable than it appears in photographs. Ask locally before setting out, then choose the beach according to the conditions rather than following a fixed list.
Yes. The interior is one of the strongest reasons to choose Naxos over a smaller Cycladic island. Around Sangri, Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos, the landscape shifts through olive groves, marble country, old footpaths and villages with their own food traditions. The Temple of Demeter gives the cultivated centre unusual historical weight. Allow at least one full day, or stay inland if quiet, archaeology and the agricultural landscape matter more than waking beside the sea.
A hotel makes sense when you want breakfast, beach arrangements and help navigating an island with considerable distances. Boutique stays often use unusual locations well, from the Temple of Demeter to the north-west coast, while beach hotels remove the daily search for parking and loungers. A private rental gives you more independence, outdoor space and a kitchen for longer stays. Remote houses require provisions and realistic expectations about the road. Choose the setting first, then decide how much service you want around it.
Four nights work for a focused stay divided between Chora and the western beaches. Six or seven nights allow time for the interior, Plaka, Mikri Vigla and days that are not organised around covering ground. Stay longer if you want to reach Abram, Ambrami, Moutsouna or the remote south-east. Naxos rewards repetition: returning to the same beach, bakery or village table often reveals more than adding another hurried stop.
