Naxos Town (Chora)

A working port, a Venetian hill town and the easiest place to experience Naxos without organising every day around a car.

Naxos Town begins at the harbour and climbs through Bourgos towards the Venetian kastro, shifting from ferry traffic and waterfront tables to stone passages where laundry still hangs between houses. The Portara draws a crowd at sunset, but Chora is more useful than its postcard suggests. Agios Georgios provides a proper town beach, the lanes hold some of the island’s best places to eat, and buses leave for villages and the western coast. Stay here for movement, choice and evenings that continue on foot. It is less secluded than rural Naxos, but far easier to inhabit spontaneously.

Why stay in Naxos Town?

Chora removes much of the administration from an island trip. The ferry arrives at the edge of town, Agios Georgios is reached on foot and dinner rarely requires a reservation, taxi or designated driver. Mornings can begin in the market or beneath the kastro before the lanes become busy; afternoons move easily between the beach, harbour and a shaded table. The town also works as a base for buses and day trips into the interior. It can feel crowded around the waterfront and Portara, particularly in high season, but the residential streets behind them settle quickly. Among Naxos restaurants, it gives you a different angle on the island, literally and otherwise.

Naxos Town or Plaka Area?

Choose Naxos Town if restaurants, harbour evenings and the freedom to manage without a car matter most. Chora offers history, transport and a usable beach within the same compact base, though it comes with ferry traffic and summer crowds. The Revel Stay edit of Plaka Area is built around longer stretches of sand, more space and days organised primarily by the sea. Stay in Chora for variety and movement. Choose Plaka when the beach is the trip and driving to dinner feels like a reasonable trade.
