Mama Shelter works because it does not take itself too seriously. The restaurant leans into Lisbon’s maritime heritage through a Portuguese take on a French brasserie, the rooftop delivers views over the Tagus that hold up against anything in the city, and the 126 rooms keep things comfortable without overcomplicating them. It sits just off Avenida da Liberdade, which puts Príncipe Real and Chiado both within reach. Louder than its neighbours on this list, but honest about what it is.

Portuguese architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho gave the building a clean white rectangular form, its upper floors appearing to lift from the hillside, while the ground floor opens in the same limestone found in the city’s royal palaces and historic squares. Inside, green velvet, oak floors and chandeliers from Santa & Cole give the 41 rooms a warmth the exterior never promises. Four rooms have outdoor terraces with fireplaces. The pool and terrace face west, which means late afternoons here are shaped around the light rather than the to-do list.

Behind the traditional tiled facade, TocToc keeps things deliberately small. Ten rooms arranged around a patio and garden, each decorated differently with objects gathered from years of travel, Haussmann references alongside bohemian and vintage pieces that feel accumulated rather than styled. In summer breakfast moves outside next to a park full of birds. In autumn it moves back to the lobby fireplace. The rooftop garden and honour bar sit above the neighbourhood. The hotel does not perform intimacy. It simply has it.

Quiet Studios took the curved modernist lines of the building and dressed them with original 1950s and 1960s furniture by Kai Kristiansen and Poul Cadovius alongside bespoke Portuguese pieces, Claus Porto amenities and Costa Nova ceramics. The Alexander Calder-inspired brass and silver mobile hanging in the lobby sets the tone before you reach the room. Each room has its own vintage bar trolley stocked with a Portuguese gin and tonic kit. The subterranean spa runs dimly lit through steam, massage and relaxation rooms converging on an indoor hydrotherapy pool. The rooftop bar sits above the red tile skyline.

Pedrita studio built the interiors around a palette of burgundy, taupe and navy, with a living wall in the courtyard planted with species from the neighbouring Botanical Garden. The open-air courtyard is framed by the building’s original black steel roof structure and a pool lined with black tiles. Below ground, a yoga room with 360-degree sound and projection sits alongside a working tattoo studio where some of Lisbon’s top artists take appointments. Red and black marble, fluid spaces and Portuguese artists woven into the fabric of the building as collaborators rather than decorators.
