Serra de Tramuntana

Mountain villages, old olive terraces and roads that make distance feel different.

serra de-tramuntana

Mallorca’s northwest is shaped by steep ground. Villages sit between limestone peaks and the sea, olive trees grow on terraces cut into the slopes, and journeys that look short on a map can take most of the morning. Valldemossa and Deià receive the attention, but the range also reaches through Sóller, Fornalutx, Esporles and the quieter foothills beyond. Staying here makes the mountains part of everyday decisions: whether to walk into the village, follow a coastal path or accept that lunch may be a slow drive away. The reward is a version of Mallorca where geography still controls the pace.

best for

• Mountain walks and steep coastal scenery
• Historic villages and old finca stays
• Travellers comfortable driving narrow roads
• Cooler mornings away from the resorts

skip if

• You want easy access to sandy beaches
• You dislike bends, climbs or slow drives
• You prefer nightlife within walking distance
• You plan to explore the entire island daily

Why stay in the Serra de Tramuntana?

The Tramuntana works best when it is treated as more than a day trip. Once the coaches leave Valldemossa and Deià settles after dinner, the villages become easier to understand. Staying overnight also gives you the cooler hours for walking, cycling or following the old paths between olive terraces. Hotels here tend to occupy buildings tied directly to the mountains: former presses, family fincas, vineyard estates and stone houses built into difficult ground. The coast is always close, but rarely simple to reach. That tension between mountain and sea is precisely what gives the region its character.

Hotels

Rondaia, Winery & Fincahotel

A vineyard stay where the wine grown outside quietly determines the rhythm of the day.

Why stay here

Rondaia makes its place in the Tramuntana through what it produces. Set outside Esporles, the estate grows and bottles its own wine, bringing guests into the vineyard through tastings, walks and dinners that begin with the same land visible from the terrace. Spacious suites and villas have separate entrances, kitchenettes and private outdoor space, giving longer stays an independent rhythm. Mediterranean forest rises behind the vines with paths threading through it, while Valldemossa and Palma remain within easy reach. This is not a hotel decorated with wine culture. The harvest is part of the reason the house exists.

Best for

Wine-led escapes, self-directed stays and travellers exploring the quieter Tramuntana foothills.

Mirabó de Valldemossa

A historic olive finca facing Valldemossa from the hillside where the village looks most beautiful.

Why stay here

Mirabó owns the view visitors come to Valldemossa hoping to find. From the pool, the monastery and honey-coloured rooftops gather across the valley, close enough to recognise yet far enough to become landscape. The finca dates to 1503 and has remained with the same family since 1898, giving its nine rooms a continuity that cannot be designed into a new hotel. Bare stone, soft fabrics and old agricultural buildings keep the atmosphere grounded. Afternoons belong to the terrace; evenings can be spent across the valley in the village. Valldemossa is present throughout, even when you never leave.

Best for

Valldemossa views, family-held hospitality and travellers drawn to deeply rooted places.

Agroturismo Son Viscos

Five rooms, a spring-fed pool and a garden that wanders through the Valldemossa valley.

Why stay here

Son Viscos feels less like checking into a hotel than being given a room in a mountain house. Five bedrooms look across the Valldemossa valley, while gardens drift past old Moorish mills, bamboo, fruit trees and animals moving freely through the grounds. The pool is fed by cold spring water, an elemental pleasure after walking beneath the Tramuntana sun. Interiors stay pale, tactile and personal, with stone floors and chosen antiques. The village is close enough for coffee and dinner on foot, yet the property remains held by fields and mountain silence. Nothing here asks the day to hurry.

Best for

Slow mornings, village walks and travellers who prefer a house to a hotel.

Sa Pedrissa - Adults Only

A centuries-old olive estate holding the cliff line between Deià and the Mediterranean.

Why stay here

Sa Pedrissa carries the Tramuntana landscape inside. Its old olive press remains in the restaurant, a reminder that the terraces outside were shaped for work long before they became a view. The farmhouse dates from the late sixteenth century and later belonged to Archduke Ludwig Salvator, the traveller and conservationist who understood this coast before tourism arrived. Today it is a small adults-only retreat, with stone rooms, gardens and a pool suspended above the water. Deià is close, but the estate faces away from the village scene. What stays with you is the cliff, the evening light and the sea.

Best for

Sunset stays, quiet couples and travellers who come to Deià for the landscape.

Hotel Valldemossa

Twelve rooms beside the Charterhouse, furnished with the confidence of a private design collection.

Why stay here

Hotel Valldemossa occupies two nineteenth-century stone houses above the village, close enough to hear its life but removed from the daytime crowds. Inside, original pieces by Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier and Miguel Milá sit against terracotta, timber and thick Mallorcan walls. The collection feels lived with rather than displayed. Olive trees surround the terraces, the Charterhouse holds the view and Deià is ten minutes along the mountain road. When the coaches leave, Valldemossa returns to birdsong, café tables and residents crossing the square. The hotel gives guests those quieter hours, which are the village at its best.

Best for

Design collectors, Valldemossa evenings and travellers who want the mountains with polished service.

Ca’s Xorc Luxury Retreat

An old olive mill above Sóller where gardens descend through mountain terraces towards the sea.

Why stay here

Ca’s Xorc sits high above the Sóller valley, where olive and citrus terraces reveal how this steep landscape has been worked for centuries. The estate dates to the late eighteenth century and its former press now anchors the restaurant, while oil is still made from the surrounding trees. Thirteen rooms and two cottages mix Mallorcan stone with pieces collected from Morocco, giving the house warmth without polishing away its rural origins. Port de Sóller lies below, Deià beyond the pass. Yet the strongest reason to stay is the garden, a private piece of Tramuntana geography arranged in levels.

Best for

Mountain retreats, garden-led stays and couples choosing landscape over village bustle.

Best Restaurants In Mallorca Es Vergeret

Where to Eat Nearby

Es Vergeret

Es Vergeret sits high above Cala Tuent, reached by a narrow road that makes the arrival feel earned. People come here for the paella, cooked properly and brought out to a table facing the bay. The view does its part, but the food holds up. It’s one of the best restaurants in Mallorca for a long, straightforward meal done right.

Serra de Tramuntana or Palma de Mallorca?

The Serra de Tramuntana asks you to organise the trip around landscape, walking and slow journeys between villages. Evenings are quieter, hotels are more self-contained and a car is useful unless you stay close to a village centre. The Revel Stay guide to Palma de Mallorca is the stronger choice if you want restaurants, galleries, architecture and most of the day to happen on foot. Choose the Tramuntana for mountain air, old estates and mornings that begin outside. Choose Palma when street life, cultural access and freedom from driving matter more.
