Naxos Town (Chora)

A working port, a Venetian hill town and the easiest place to experience Naxos without organising every day around a car.

Naxos Travel Guide Naxos

Naxos Town begins at the harbour and climbs through Bourgos towards the Venetian kastro, shifting from ferry traffic and waterfront tables to stone passages where laundry still hangs between houses. The Portara draws a crowd at sunset, but Chora is more useful than its postcard suggests. Agios Georgios provides a proper town beach, the lanes hold some of the island’s best places to eat, and buses leave for villages and the western coast. Stay here for movement, choice and evenings that continue on foot. It is less secluded than rural Naxos, but far easier to inhabit spontaneously.

Why stay in Naxos Town?

Chora removes much of the administration from an island trip. The ferry arrives at the edge of town, Agios Georgios is reached on foot and dinner rarely requires a reservation, taxi or designated driver. Mornings can begin in the market or beneath the kastro before the lanes become busy; afternoons move easily between the beach, harbour and a shaded table. The town also works as a base for buses and day trips into the interior. It can feel crowded around the waterfront and Portara, particularly in high season, but the residential streets behind them settle quickly. For travellers who want Naxos to feel lived in rather than escaped to, Chora makes the stronger base.

Hotels

Naxos Green Village Hotel

Twenty acres of trees creating the breathing space Chora’s old streets cannot provide.

Why stay here

Naxos Green Village sits on the town’s leafy edge, trading immediate postcard proximity for gardens, room to park and a quieter night. Forty-four rooms and apartments open onto balconies or terraces among extensive planting, while the harbour and centre remain around ten minutes away on foot. The scale works especially well for families and longer stays, allowing guests to spread out without becoming dependent on a car for dinner. On a page dominated by compact townhouses, its reason for belonging is refreshingly physical: space, shade and greenery, with Chora still close enough to remain the daily centre.

Best for

Families, longer stays and travellers wanting gardens within walking distance of Naxos Town.

Burgos Barrio Naxos

Four petite apartments inside the medieval lanes where Chora’s Venetian history remains the street plan.

Why stay here

Burgos Barrio places guests inside the part of Naxos Town other hotels can only overlook. Four small apartments occupy two buildings in Bourgos, the maze of stone lanes beneath the kastro where cars have never shaped the scale. Some units include kitchenettes; all require arriving on foot over cobbles, with luggage and church bells part of the honest exchange. The harbour and Portara remain close, yet the atmosphere changes completely once the alleys narrow. This is Chora as a residence rather than a view, with the old town’s irregular fabric becoming part of every return home.

Best for

Old-town atmosphere, light travellers and guests who want to sleep inside Chora’s historic core.

Emery Hotel

A dependable small hotel beneath the kastro, with Chora working smoothly in every direction.

Why stay here

Emery does not need a theatrical concept because its position and practical decisions are already right. Sixteen bright rooms and apartments sit a few minutes below the Venetian castle, with Coco-Mat mattresses, well-regarded breakfast and cooking facilities in the larger units. Agios Georgios is an eight-minute walk, while the harbour and old town unfold immediately beyond the door. Bikes and cars can be arranged when inland villages call. It belongs on this page as the hotel that quietly removes friction, leaving guests free to move between beach, town and island without building the stay around logistics.

Best for

Reliable comfort, families and travellers who want a properly run hotel in walkable Chora.

Almi of Naxos

Four seafront apartments where the Portara and old town share the same horizon.

Why stay here

Almi occupies the Grotta shoreline north of the port, a position that makes Naxos Town’s defining landmarks feel almost domestic. The Portara rises nearby, the kastro and white houses face across the water, and the harbour remains an easy walk. Four apartments sleep between two and six, with kitchenettes and balconies supporting longer, independent stays. Breakfast and a beach shuttle add just enough service without changing the scale. Chora is usually experienced from inside its lanes. Almi offers the rare pleasure of stepping back and seeing the whole town arranged beyond the sea.

Best for

Seafront views, apartment stays and travellers who want the Portara close at hand.

Makava Suites

Eight independent urban suites giving Chora’s quieter edge its own private rooftop ritual.

Why stay here

Makava sits just beyond Chora’s busiest lanes, close to bakeries, markets and the practical rhythm of town life. Eight suites include kitchenettes and coffee machines, giving guests the freedom to settle in rather than organise every meal outside. The upper rooms add private rooftop jacuzzis, where the white houses of the old town stack across the evening view. Agios Georgios and the harbour can both be reached in around ten minutes on foot. It belongs here as the urban sanctuary its name promises: connected to Chora, but with enough distance to make returning feel restorative.

Best for

Self-directed stays, rooftop evenings and travellers wanting modern space near central Chora.

Naxian Aura Suites

Three Cycladic suites between Chora’s lived-in streets and the shallow water of Agios Georgios.

Why stay here

Naxian Aura makes a persuasive case for keeping a Naxos stay small. Three open-plan suites sit in a central Chora neighbourhood, 200 metres from Agios Georgios beach and within walking distance of the harbour, kastro and Portara. Kitchens and balconies allow mornings to begin privately, while Coco-Mat beds give the rooms a level of comfort their simplicity might not suggest. The hosts remain closely involved because the scale permits it. Most importantly, the suites leave the experience to the town: a swim before breakfast, market errands and the marble doorway of Apollo at sunset.

Best for

First-time Naxos stays, beach-and-town days and travellers who value personal hosting.

Naxos Restaurants AVATON 1739

Where to Eat Nearby

AVATON 1739

AVATON is less taverna, more terrace. Up in the Kastro, on the old Ursuline monastery terrace, it looks out across Naxos Town and works best later in the day, when wine, cocktails, and small dishes make more sense than a formal meal. Among Naxos restaurants, it gives you a different angle on the island, literally and otherwise.

Naxos Town or Plaka Area?

Choose Naxos Town if restaurants, harbour evenings and the freedom to manage without a car matter most. Chora offers history, transport and a usable beach within the same compact base, though it comes with ferry traffic and summer crowds. The Revel Stay edit of Plaka Area is built around longer stretches of sand, more space and days organised primarily by the sea. Stay in Chora for variety and movement. Choose Plaka when the beach is the trip and driving to dinner feels like a reasonable trade.
