Serra da Estrela is mainland Portugal at its highest and most physically demanding. Roads climb from granite villages through pine forest, open pasture and exposed plateaus where weather can change in minutes. The Zêzere valley carries the clear shape of glacial movement, while Manteigas remains closely associated with burel, the dense wool once worn by local shepherds and now used by several of the region’s strongest hotels. This is not an alpine resort transplanted into Portugal. Cheese production, village agriculture, old pousadas and mountain craft give the landscape its own working culture. Come prepared to walk, drive slowly and accept that the weather will influence the plan.
Serra da Estrela cannot be understood properly from a single viewpoint near the summit. Staying in the mountains creates time for the glacial valleys, high villages and working traditions that sit beneath the scenery. Around Manteigas, wool production connects shepherding to contemporary Portuguese design. In Videmonte, chestnuts, lavender and beekeeping continue alongside carefully restored village houses. Belmonte adds castle history and one of Portugal’s most significant Jewish communities. Hotels range from former pousadas and small retreats to active bases organised around walking and cycling. The landscape can be severe, particularly in winter, but that exposure is part of what separates Serra da Estrela from Portugal’s more familiar coastal routes.

Manzwine focuses on something specific, bringing native grape varieties back into the conversation and working closely with them. The wines feel distinct because of that, but never forced. Tastings stay relaxed and personal, often led by the people behind the work itself. It is a place built on patience rather than scale.
Serra da Estrela is inland, elevated and shaped by walking, wool, granite and rapidly changing mountain weather. The Revel Stay guide to Ericeira follows the Atlantic, where surf breaks, fishing-town streets and coastal hotels create a more social form of escape. Choose Serra da Estrela for high roads, glacial landscapes and evenings beside a fire. Choose Ericeira for ocean energy, seafood and time organised around the swell. Both reward travellers who respond to the weather instead of expecting it to cooperate.

Fishing-town streets, serious Atlantic swell and a coast where surf culture has become part of daily life.
