Plaka & Mikri Vigla

Long sand, stronger wind and the south-west coast of Naxos at its least complicated.

hotels-in-plaka-1

Plaka and nearby Mikri Vigla offer two versions of the Naxos beach stay. Plaka stretches south in a long run of pale sand, with tavernas, small hotels and enough room to walk beyond the organised sections. Mikri Vigla is more exposed, divided between a protected swimming bay and a windier beach that has become one of the island’s main kitesurfing spots. Neither has the density or evening life of Chora. That is largely the point. Days begin close to the water, lunch rarely demands a change of clothes and a car opens the villages and quieter coves behind the coast.

best for

• Long beach days and sunset swims
• Couples and friends hiring a car
• Small hotels close to the sand
• Kitesurfing and active coastal stays

skip if

• You want restaurants on every street
• You prefer exploring entirely on foot
• Wind quickly spoils a beach day
• Harbour evenings matter more than space

Why stay in Plaka & Mikri Vigla?

This part of Naxos makes the sea difficult to treat as an occasional activity. In Plaka, the beach runs for kilometres, moving from serviced loungers and tavernas into quieter stretches where little interrupts the sand. Mikri Vigla adds more force. The northern beach catches the meltemi and draws kitesurfers, while the southern bay offers calmer water when conditions cooperate. Hotels are smaller and more dispersed than those around Chora, and evenings tend to remain close to the property or require a drive. Stay here when swimming, wind and space should determine the day, and when limited nightlife feels like a fair exchange.

Hotels

Naxian on the Beach

Ten couples-only suites placing Plaka’s long sand almost at the foot of the bed.

Why stay here

Naxian on the Beach removes nearly every obstacle between room and water. Ten suites sit around ten metres from Plaka beach, each with an indoor or outdoor jet tub and broad openings angled towards the sunset. Reserved loungers avoid the morning competition, while Tortuga handles breakfast, lunch and late drinks beside the sand. The small scale keeps the property closer to a beach house than a resort. Its argument is wonderfully direct: wake beside Plaka, swim before the organised sections fill and return barefoot without crossing a road.

Best for

Couples, direct beach access and travellers who want Plaka to organise the entire stay.

The Key

A contemporary Cycladic hideaway near Mikri Vigla, where private space matters more than a conventional hotel scene.

Why stay here

The Key belongs to the quieter land behind Mikri Vigla, close enough to reach the coast easily but removed from the busier beachfront strip. Clean volumes, pale stone and carefully framed outdoor spaces give the property a sharper architectural identity than many small island hotels. The appeal lies in autonomy: private terraces, room to withdraw and the freedom to move between Mikri Vigla’s swimming bay, its windier kitesurfing beach and the villages inland. This is not Plaka itself, but a nearby alternative for travellers who want the south-west coast with more privacy and less passing footfall.

Best for

Design-conscious couples, private stays and travellers exploring the coast by car.

Naxos Earth Suites

Low-built suites near Mikri Vigla, with the landscape given more room than the architecture.

Why stay here

Naxos Earth Suites sits inland from Mikri Vigla, using stone, planted roofs and restrained volumes to settle into the dry Cycladic terrain. The suites provide more space and separation than a beachfront room, while private terraces and pools allow slow afternoons away from the wind. Mikri Vigla’s two beaches remain close: one known for kitesurfing, the other better suited to sheltered swimming. A car is useful, particularly for dinner and trips into the mountain villages. The distance from the sand is the trade, but it buys privacy and a clearer sense of the island beyond its shoreline.

Best for

Private-pool stays, contemporary architecture and travellers balancing beach days with inland drives.

Naxos Restaurants Sun Kyma

Where to Eat Nearby

Sun Kyma

Sun Kyma is really about the beach first. You can spend the day there, swim, come back sandy, order something simple, and let it drift into sunset. That ease is the point. It is one of those restaurants in Naxos that works because it doesn’t separate the meal from the rest of the day.

Plaka & Mikri Vigla or Naxos Town?

Choose Plaka and Mikri Vigla when long days by the water matter more than evening variety. The coast offers better sand, more space and hotels built around swimming, wind and outdoor living, but a car makes the stay considerably easier. The Revel Stay edit of Naxos Town (Chora) is stronger for restaurants, harbour walks, historic lanes and travelling without your own transport. Stay in Chora for movement and spontaneity. Choose the south-west coast when the beach deserves to set the timetable.
